Performative Surface

The Integrated Topography & Ecological Shell

This project explores the hybridization of landscape and architecture through a single, continuous performative surface. By blurring the line between building and ground, the structure transforms the traditional roof into an active, occupiable terrain that facilitates ecological growth and multi-level public circulation.

Phase 01

The Vanishing Structure

The structure does not sit on the site; it is an extension of the site. The surface serves a dual purpose as both a protective building envelope and a public walkway, allowing the architectural volume to vanish into the existing landscape while providing new vantage points for the community.

Tectonic Layering

The section detail reveals a complex assembly of filter fabrics, drainage mats, and waterproof membranes. This layering ensures that the structural concrete shell remains protected from root penetration and water infiltration while maintaining a fertile substrate for local flora.

The Isothermal Shield

Utilizing the high thermal mass of engineered soil and a vegetated “shell,” the building achieves natural temperature regulation. This living roof buffers the interior café from external fluctuations, reducing the mechanical cooling load in summer and retaining geothermal warmth in winter.

Vaulted Geometry

The primary load-bearing element is a reinforced concrete vaulted shell. This geometry is optimized for Earth Load Transfer, effectively converting the massive weight of the green roof into compressive forces that are channeled directly into the reinforced foundation footings.

Hydrological Performance

The assembly functions as an active stormwater management system. Rainfall is captured by the surface vegetation, filtered through the substrate, and diverted through a drainage critical manifold at the building’s base, preventing runoff and nourishing the surrounding ecology.

Environmental Systems

Peak Solar Protection: The calculated “eyebrow” overhang shades high-performance glazing during the summer solstice while allowing for passive solar heat gain in winter.

Social Connectivity: The tiered seating (amphitheater style) integrates social gathering into the structural slope, turning a required gradient into a functional public asset.
